When it comes to joining an online social network, quality not quantity is what you should aim for. There are some great quality websites like Facebook, Orkut, Linked In, and Friendster. However you should join the one that best suits your needs. When it comes to online social networking, keeping all your chickens in one basket may turn out to be a much better strategy as it keeps you from spreading yourself really thin.
Facebook has been the best of the lot and that has been because it meets my personal and professional needs.
It wasnt really difficult for me to select Facebook, because all my friends are already there! You can see which site has the most of your friends and start off on that site too.
I am going to share some tips on how I was able to use Facebook successfully and I am sure you will agree that these are generic enough for you to use them to good effect. So read on.
1. Create a great Profile: Most people you encounter on Facebook do not have a complete profile and many dont even have a picture! So when someone does, people take notice. This is the reason why your profile should be complete and easy to browse through. It should be professional but not too formal, include a nice picture and most importantly include your website and personal interests. Including personal interests lets other users connect to you in a personal way which is very important in order to make the most of social networking.
2. Create a big network: Once you are done with creating a great profile, next step is to create a great network. Start off by adding your friends and then look for their friends that have similar interests. The bigger your circle of friends, the greater will be your reach and the more effective youre marketing efforts.
3. Talk to friends: You have a great profile, your network is building, and so whats next? You have to start connecting with people now and the best way to do this is on Facebook. Start off by sending out messages to people. A lot of people are quite addicted to Facebook and check their messages very frequently. They also make a habit of responding to these messages. By sending messages you become an active member of the Facebook community and it helps you gain popularity.
4. Hand out some Gifts: One of my favorite things on Facebook is to receive gifts. What if they are virtual, its the thought that counts, right? Giving virtual gifts is a very cool feature of Facebook and who doesnt enjoy being gifted? So show your appreciation and let others get that warm feeling too. Give out a few virtual gifts to your friends, appreciate and be appreciated.
5. Share applications on Facebook: Facebook has a large number of applications that you can use to listen to music, play games etc. Start using a few that you find interesting and then invite your friends to use the ones that you enjoy. This also helps you establish a connection with your friends like the virtual gifts.
6. Join groups in Facebook: There are hundreds of groups on Facebook and each of them is focused on a specific niche. You can join one that meets your interests and be assured that you will meet people with similar goals and interests which will further help you build a good network.
7. Create a group: When you are active on groups for a while you will find patterns like what makes a group tick? Groups that people are looking for but not finding elsewhere etc. Use this information to create a group of your own, make it a bit unique and fun. Invite friends to join in and in no time you will have a vibrant community.
8. Publicizing your Events through Facebook: If you have a good and large social network on Facebook, there is no better tool to introduce your new product or service than by creating an events page and inviting your friends to view it and even get feedback from them on the event! This helps spread the word of mouth for your new services and it can create quite a buzz sometimes.
9. Syndicate your Blog: Regular bloggers can use RSS to link their blogs to their Facebook profile. So every time you add an entry to your blog, it will start appearing on your profile page. This is a great way to keep your profile and have your friends keep coming back to your profile over and over again.
10. Make a community: At the end of it all, you should get a feeling of being a part of a community and your friends should get the same feeling. You should be active, have a lot of comments on others pages and give feedback to them. Introduce people to each other and have a lot of fun.
So there you have it, a few tips for building a great brand and a great network of friends while at the same time promoting your products and services and having fun doing it. Use these tips wisely and with a little patience they will surely reward you.

Car dealer indicted
Three others are suspected in illegal funneling of funds
Mike Cruz, Staff Writer
Inland Valley Daily Bulletin
Article Created:06/16/2008 08:37:48 PM PDT
SAN BERNARDINO - Authorities unsealed a 37-count indictment against
one of the region's most influential Republicans and three others for
illegally funneling tens of thousands of dollars into campaign coffers
for several prominent state politicians.
State and local prosecutors said on Monday that auto dealer Mark
Leggio and friends and employees pumped more than $50,000 in illegal
campaign contributions to state Senate and Assembly races from 2002 to
2006,, according to the California Attorney General's Office.
Leggio co-owns Mark Christopher Auto Center in Ontario and Mountain
View Chevrolet in Upland.
Authorities say Leggio exceeded the $3,300 campaign contribution limit
to the campaigns of Assemblyman Anthony Adams, Sen. Bob Dutton, Bill
Leonard of the state Board of Equalization, Superior Court Judge Elia
Pirozzi, Banning Mayor Brenda Salas and Ontario Councilman Alan
Wapner.
Leggio, described as the the hub of the conspiracy, made the maximum
contributions to the candidates and then had others make additional
contributions, explained Gary W. Schons, senior assistant attorney
general.
He would give in his own name, and then he would go to a second party
and they would give the maximum, Schons said. And he would reimburse
them.
The contributions in question were made in six Assembly and Senate
races and one state Board of Equalization race. Prosecutors said they
found no evidence of wrongdoing by the political candidates.
On Monday, Leggio and three other defendants - James Lloyd Deremiah
and father-son team Nicola Cacucciolo and Nick Vito Cacucciolo -
appeared before Judge Donna Gunnell Garza in San Bernardino Superior
Court.
The indictment contains 11 felony counts of perjury, filing false
statements and conspiracy charges and 26 misdemeanor counts of
campaign contribution and reporting violations.
Schons and Riverside Deputy District Attorney Michael Cabral, would
not say why Leggio and the others made the alleged contributions.
If convicted, Leggio could face up to six years in state prison, while
the other defendants face up to three years.
The defendants are scheduled to return to court July 11 for
arraignment on the charges.
Attempts to reach Leggio were unsuccessful, and his lawyer Tom
Warwick, of San Diego, did not return a phone call for comment.
In political circles, Leggio and Mark Christopher Auto Center are
classified as a major donor to campaigns, registering $33,000 and
$351,000 in contributions statewide in 2007 and 2006, respectively,
according to Secretary of State campaign finance records.
The current charges cap a year-and-a-half joint investigation with
Riverside County prosecutors and the state Attorney General's Office.
The case is being heard in San Bernardino County because the alleged
crimes occurred here.
However, San Bernardino District Attorney Michael A. Ramos recused
himself and his office from the case, citing a conflict of interest
with Leggio.
They have been longtime political supporters and personal friends,
said Susan Mickey, spokeswoman for Ramos's office. So he felt it was
inappropriate for this office to handle this case.
Riverside County investigators first got wind of the alleged money
laundering in November 2006 while investigating suspicious financial
activity in the 65th District state Assembly race, explained Riverside
County District Attorney Rod Pacheco.
The timing and pattern of campaign contributions caught investigators'
attention, and they pressed further.
There was a lot of money flying around there, Pacheco said of the
race. And then he popped up. It was just so obvious.
Riverside authorities brought in the Attorney General's Office to
assist with prosecution outside their jurisdiction.
Pacheco explained the allegations violate two sets of campaign laws:
Proposition 34, which set campaign contribution limits, and sunshine
laws, which make the contributions public.
It's deception in democracy is what it is, Pacheco said.
Dutton, one of the region's most influential Republicans, said he was
surprised by the news. He described the Leggio family, as a whole, as
extremely giving, and not just politically, but anytime their
community is in need.
The Leggios are a family on your short list to call for help, said
Dutton, who is from Rancho Cucamonga.
Dutton said he had a hard time believing that Leggio committed any
illegal acts, but added, I'm kind of shocked, but I'm sure Mark will
do whatever he has to to make it right.
Dutton said he needed to learn more before making any decisions
regarding campaign funds from Leggio or the others involved.
Campaign contributions indictments are rare because most people
understand that these types of activities are wrong, explained Bob
Stern, president of the Center for Governmental Studies in Los
Angeles.
It's the worst form of campaign finance violations, Stern said.
That's because not only has the limit been exceeded, but there has
been no disclosure, he explained. The law regarding contribution
limits was passed in 2000 as legislators tried to stop the influence
of big money, Stern said.
Adams, a Hesperia Republican, said he was frankly shocked but added
that indictments are only allegations. If the allegations are proven
true, Adams said, the campaign funds would be returned immediately.
Supervisor Gary Ovitt, the head of the county's GOP Central Committee,
remains supportive of Leggio, said Burt Southard, press liaison for
Ovitt.
Mark Leggio is a very good friend of ours and has a very upright
reputation, Southard said. This looks like a political attack.
The state of the economy has created the biggest problem for campaign
contributions this year, but the indictment should pose little problem
for local candidates.
Leggio (indictment) is not going to hurt Republicans, Southard said.
There are so many other things that are hurting Republicans ... the
Iraq war, the economy and the price of gasoline, are far more
important issues.
Staff Writers George Watson and Robert Rogers contributed to this
report.

The dealership sells new and old vehicles, including General Motors and Ford cars and trucks, and its logo shows a cowboy holding a pistol.
It has sold over 30 cars and trucks in the past three days, an increase which the owners put down to their promotional offer.
Inspiration from Obama
Mr Muller said that every buyer so far except one guy from Canada and one old guy chose the gun, rather than the gas card.
He recommends a Kel-Tec .380 pistol, which he describes as a nice little handgun that fits in your pocket. (Thor - care to comment?)
He added that the promotion was inspired by recent comments from one of the Democratic nominees for the presidential election, saying: We did it because of Barack Obama.
He said all those people in the Midwest, youve got to have compassion for them because theyre clinging to their guns and their Bibles. I found that quite offensive. We all go to church on Sunday and we all carry guns.
The website advertisement for the offer, which continues until the end of the month, mentions that an approved background check on gun ownership is required.
