I spent a few hours with Jim Hagen at the railroad today, clearing track of leaves and other flammables.

During the course of the day, I finished the final requirement for basic certification as an engineer, which means that I'm now qualified to run the diesel on work trains, which is all I need in order to do my work around the railroad.

I'm going to get trained in fire fighting, so that I can stand by as needed to take the diesel and the fire car -- a tanker/pumper -- out if a fire starts along the tracks. The RGN is licensed as a railroad, and someone has to be available for fire control whenever the steam engines are operating. A good thing, too. The steam engines set a few fires in the woods every summer, and the diesel and fire car is always ready to go whenever we are operating the steam engines.

Jack Flemming and I filled the fire car this afternoon. It didn't amount to much -- put a hose in the top and sit down and talk for 45 minutes while it filled, getting up every once in a while to see how things were going.

I like Jack. Jack is a retired railroad engineer, and did most of my training on the diesel.

We finally got the car filled, a moment or two before we had all the world's problems solved, or at least identified. Since I was certified, Jack told me where to move the car, and then got out of the way and let me go.

The fire car is a lot heavier than what I was used to handling -- a couple cars of gravel or ties might weigh 500-800 pounds, but the tanker/pumper weighs about a ton and a half. The operating characteristics of the diesel are quite different with that kind of weight behind it. Lucky for me, I am old enough to have had the sense to feel my way as I went along, taking it slow and easy.

Trains, even the small scale we run, don't stop on a dime. You have to ease them to a stop, even when all you are pulling as a half-ton or so. With the fire car, the train didn't even stop on a quarter.

I don't plan to become certified to run the steam engines. A lot is required to get steam certification, including high pressure boiler operator certification.

I might take the required training over the next few years just for the fun of learning, but the steam engine is a complex beast, requiring the engineer to keep track of about nine things at once. I'm not sure I want to try to keep track of more than five things at once at my age, and a good thing, too, because at my age I'm probably capable of keeping track of three.

A 261 Northern steam locomotive and a bunch of older cars came down the DP track just about the time I was leaving. The train is being used in a film being shot in the area, and apparently the filming was done on the sly.

The picture shows the 261 Northern, but was taken a few years ago. The train will be back in the Dells, this time in public view, on June 21-22.
