In the years 1976 to 1996, the USA led the Paralympics medal tables at every Paralympics. In 2000, they came fifth; in 2004, they came fourth; in 2008 they came third. Not, perhaps, a bad showing. But compare it to their record for able bodied athletes. 2008 is the only year in the same time in which the USA did not top the table, and even then they came second.

The USA is justifiably proud of their record at Olympic Games. But the comparative showing at the Paralympics paints a rather sad picture of the difference they make between able bodied athletes and those who have disabilities. Interestingly - and, yes, okay, surprisingly to me - China have topped the Paralympic table in the past two Paralympics. I will be interested to see if they continue to have such success: whether, in fact, four years ago they were practising for the Beijing Olympics, and their Paralympic results will drop off now (they came 6th in 2000), as not being so important.

It does make me wonder about facilities in the US for disabled athletes. I have felt, quite often when my disabled American friends blog about their lives, that they have been on the bad end of discrimination and negative stereotyping because of their disabilities. I am not saying that it is more common in the US than elsewhere, just that I have more US friends, and given the USapos;s fantastic record in Olympics I was actually really surprised to see that they didnapos;t do so well in Paralympics.

Before you ask, Britain came second in 2000, 2004 and 2008. This also surprises me, in a positive way, because I would not have thought that they would be so regularly near the top. And I do remember a few years ago that Tanni Grey-Thompson (a renowned - and now retired - Paralympian) was voted as one of the top three athletes of the year. (I also, of course, remember that the BBC singularly failed to have any way of getting her up onto the stage, which perhaps says something about media attitudes to disabled athletes, and maybe makes it more impressive that the general public voted for her.)
